Bio

My works delve into the subject of women’s beauty and the power of beauty over the women themselves and those who are attracted to it. Through the medium of clay, I mold sculptural works of women’s heads and faces to express their inner turmoil with accepting their own beauty and how beauty has afflicted them. In the beginning of my works, I experimented with expressive facial expressions on functional ceramic pieces that would evoke empathy from the viewer. I focused on the progression of women accepting their beauty but later moved my focus to sculpting women that represent mythological stories of women who are trapped by their beauty.

I discovered my love and fascination with sculpting faces by being inspired by art by Johnson Tsang, a porcelain sculptural ceramics artist who is best known for his expressive works. My first face sculpture, “ The Screamer” , was my catalyst to discovering my enjoyment of creating faces and the world of using people to express societal problems. I then moved on to create “ Open Your Eyes”, a work of an asian woman with two fingers pulling her right eye open in order to make it appear larger and rounder, trying to conform to the western beauty standards. “ Open Your Eyes”, brought me to probe further the psychological harm of beauty standards and how it manifests outwardly for women.
